SERVING IN KENYA

The Land and Its People

Kenya is located in Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean between Somalia and Tanzania, and covering an area twice the size of Nevada. The climate varies greatly within the country. The coastal areas are lush and tropical. Parts of the interior are hot and arid. But Mount Kenya, at 17,057 feet, is Africa’s second highest peak and holds some glaciers.

Kenya’s population is about 39 million, of which only 22 percent live in urban areas. The official languages are English and Kiswahili, but there are numerous indigenous languages. Although 45 percent of Kenyans are Protestant and another 33 percent are Roman Catholic, 10 million people follow indigenous and other beliefs. Furthermore, Kenya has seen an influx of a quarter-million refugees from neighboring countries.

There are many natural resources in Kenya, including precious metals and other valuable minerals, but the wildlife and game preserves are considered by many to be its biggest treasure.

Bible Translation Needs

There are several important projects underway and more on the drawing board (awaiting funds and qualified volunteers) in Kenya. For example, more than 150 translators and support personnel, 75 percent of whom are nationals, are laboring to achieve The Bantu Initiative—a plan to translate the Scriptures into all 250 of the Bantu family of languages. This enormous challenge will bring God’s message of love to millions of people.

Wycliffe Associates volunteers and financial partners recently helped complete the construction of a new multi-purpose building that provides 5,000 square feet of workspace for translators and support personnel—critical to the acceleration of Bible translation. However, there is still a need for more volunteers to fill positions that will free up translation personnel to focus all of their attention on the life-changing work of Bible translation. We need your help! Why not consider taking a mission vacation in Kenya?
