West Timor Translation Center

It is difficult for us to imagine the "language struggle" of a far-flung, multi-island nation. The national language is basically the "official" language—but not really functional in many parts of the country, where generations have grown up speaking entirely different local languages. Located on the edge of the Indian Ocean, Timor is an island divided into East and West, an island that has been the scene of one of the ugliest conflicts in our entire lifetime. And yet . . . God is still on the throne. God is still sovereign. God still loves people. And God's work goes on!

Working under shockingly difficult conditions, Bible translators refuse to give up the work of turning God's Word into the heart languages of the people—desperately needy people. Incredibly, 63 translators are working with limited workspace, hampered by the lack of basic necessities and equipment in a "shell" of a building Wycliffe Associates helped provide. These translators are striving to "make it work," but they shouldn't have to bear that burden.

A Work in Progress
Wycliffe Associates provided materials and sent volunteers to West Timor, a number of years ago, to build their first translation center building. Recently a Wycliffe Associates team repaired the roof, installed gutters and since the building is already overflowing with national translators coming in to work, they put up a sun screen to make the courtyard useful for work. They also repaired the plumbing to make living easier for the three missionaries who are flat out trying to work with 23 language groups.

The construction of Phase 2 is now underway. This addition will provide a garage, storage area, bath, and sleeping areas for national translators. Immediately upon completion of this phase, construction will begin on housing for translators, guest consultants, and volunteers.

One worker says that we'll be "building the machine," creating an amazing engine of Bible translation, which ultimately will result in the Word of God being translated into the remaining 50 to 60 languages.

Right now $135,000 is required to move this project along. Will you give generously so that the Timorese people will have the opportunity to hear the Bible and to really hear it for the first time, in their heart language?

You have a remarkable opportunity to personally make a difference. Please consider doing volunteer work overseas in the beautiful Timor islands. Lend your skills, your helping hands, your encouragement in person—by working on the West Timor Translation Center expansion.
