During my first week working with Wycliffe Associates, a colleague gave me a video titled "Vision 2025" to watch as part of my orientation. One morning before anyone else had arrived at the office, I watched the video and learned that 3,000 languages had not even one verse of scripture. With an average of just 20 new translations beginning each year, it would be 2150 before these people would have their first verse of scripture translated! Vision 2025 proposed to accomplish in 25 years what would otherwise take 150 years. It was a vision that immediately captured my heart and mind. At Wycliffe Associates, we immediately determined to increase our support for Bible translation worldwide.
In a few days, I will celebrate my fifth anniversary of service with Wycliffe Associates. A lot has happened during these years. As I type this message, I did a rough calculation of where we stand in relation to our Vision 2025 goal. Based on the latest information I have, there are now approximately 2,700 languages remaining that need Bible translation. That is exciting progress!
The current pace of starting new translations is now approaching eight languages per month. In order to reach our goal of beginning all of the remaining translations needed by 2025, we need to average eleven new translation starts per month throughout the remaining years. What can Wycliffe Associates do to help make this vision a reality? Is there anything you can do to help? Absolutely!
