8/23/2009: Supporting Bible Translation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Bookmark and Share

For nearly 10 years now, Bible translation teams of the East Congo Group have had to work on their projects remotely from Nairobi, Kenya, due to political instability in the areas of their language communities. However, that situation is changing and there is now the sense of a new beginning within teams with the possibility of once again living and working among the Congolese. This year two more families have moved back into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) bringing the total number of staff once again living there to eight adults and seven children. Wycliffe Associates volunteers are being asked to provide administrative support for these translators by working in one of four administrative roles that are currently unstaffed. These positions are currently located in Nairobi, Kenya (which is an English speaking country), but the possibility of locating these services in the DRC is being considered.

1. Assistant to the Director - After years of working from a remote location, Bible translators are anxiously awaiting their return to life among the language group they serve. You can provide administrative support to these translators. This will include a variety of clerical, business, and other office-related tasks.

2. Associate Director for Resources - Manages development databases and updates mailing lists, financial records, and printed labels. Generates reports of gifts and pledges for use by departmental and other institutional and governing body committees. Tracks and reports department expense budgets and revenue figures. Prepares grant requests.

3. Language Programs Executive Assistant - Provides help to academic functions such as technical studies, library, training programs, and related programs.

4. Language Program Intern - Participates in language-related projects appropriate to the skills and expertise of the intern. May include analysis of language data, authoring/co-authoring of linguistic papers/reports, language survey; preparation of literacy materials; working with dictionary production, or developing exegetical materials.

You, or someone you know, may be the person God has prepared to share in accelerating Bible translation in this part of Africa. Just reply to web@wycliffeassociates.org, tell your friends, or give us a call toll-free at 1-800-THE WORD (1-800-843-9673) to learn more about these opportunities.
